FIPS-enabled sample JupyterLab single-user notebook server for zero-to-jupyterhub-k8s

This is the FIPS-enabled variant of the Chainguard jupyterhub-k8s-singleuser-sample image. It ships the same JupyterLab single-user notebook server from zero-to-jupyterhub-k8s — reusing the identical non-FIPS package — and adds openssl-config-fipshardened so that the Python stack's cryptography routes through the system OpenSSL in FIPS mode. It is a drop-in replacement for the non-FIPS jupyterhub-k8s-singleuser-sample image, with two caveats:
This Chainguard Container ships with a validated redistribution of OpenSSL's FIPS provider module. For more on FIPS support in Chainguard Containers, refer to the guide on FIPS-enabled Chainguard Images on Chainguard Academy.
The notebook server's Python cryptography is provided by the system cryptography package linked against the FIPS OpenSSL provider; if the FIPS configuration is removed or corrupted, cryptographic operations fail rather than falling back to non-approved algorithms.
jupyterhub-k8s-singleuser-sample-fips is the sample single-user notebook server image from the zero-to-jupyterhub-k8s project. It runs JupyterLab and is normally spawned per user by JupyterHub rather than run directly — JupyterHub injects the server configuration and API token at spawn time.
The image is non-root: it runs as the jovyan user (UID 1000, primary GID 1000, also a member of the users group GID 100) from the working directory /home/jovyan, and the notebook server listens on port 8888. The default entrypoint is /sbin/tini -- and the default command is jupyter lab.
Deploy it as the singleuser image of the JupyterHub Helm chart, pairing it with the Chainguard jupyterhub-k8s-hub-fips image for a fully FIPS-enabled deployment:

For a quick local smoke test you can run the server outside of JupyterHub. Bind it to all interfaces and read the login token from the logs:
You can then open the notebook at the printed URL, for example http://127.0.0.1:8888/lab?token=<token>.

For cases where you need container images with shells and package managers to build or debug, most Chainguard Containers come paired with a development, or -dev, variant.
In all other cases, including Chainguard Containers tagged as :latest or with a specific version number, the container images include only an open-source application and its runtime dependencies. These minimal container images typically do not contain a shell or package manager.
Although the -dev container image variants have similar security features as their more minimal versions, they include additional software that is typically not necessary in production environments. We recommend using multi-stage builds to copy artifacts from the -dev variant into a more minimal production image.
To improve security, Chainguard Containers include only essential dependencies. Need more packages? Chainguard customers can use Custom Assembly to add packages, either through the Console, chainctl, or API.
To use Custom Assembly in the Chainguard Console: navigate to the image you'd like to customize in your Organization's list of images, and click on the Customize image button at the top of the page.
